Life is Moving Through You
Automation is life.
What isn’t automated goes extinct.
Any inconvenience in which we have to sit with uncertainty for longer than a few seconds feels uncomfortable…even foreign for our nervous system. And when one part feels vulnerable, another part searches for an exit.
• We sense emptiness, a part of us seeks distraction.
• We sense shame, a part of us hides.
• We sense inadequacy, a part of us seeks self-improvement.
• We sense freedom, a part of us seeks self-sabotage.
Over time, these reactions become automatic. Our bodies learn patterns for escaping the discomfort of the present moment.
The problem is relationships—whether it’s with yourself, your partner, or your god—is formed in uncertainty. In these moments we learn who we are…we learn who others are…we learn what this relationship really is. Otherwise it’s just a series of outside-in automations.
Most people believe they’re at capacity, and while that may feel true, the reality is most people’s emotional capacity has been dramatically reduced without them knowing it. For most, it’s been years since they’ve sat alone with themselves, devoid fo distraction.
We deeply want to authentically experience elevated emotions, but because our relationship to the present moment is fractured, it becomes difficult to fully receive life as it is.
So we oscillate between two modes:
life is happening to me
or
life is happening for me.
So our identities unconsciously switch:
victim mode
to
hero mode.
Each feels good for a moment.
Each briefly quells uncertainty.
But each creates fractured relationship within self.
Most people land somewhere in-between:
unsure how to proceed,
half-committed,
rarely fully present,
rarely fully convinced.
But what’s a more relational way to move through life?
Instead of:
life is happening to me - or - life is happening for me
what if you felt:
life is happening through me.
Try it.
Say aloud: “Life is happening through me.”
Notice: What opens within you here?
Feel it.
Does your chest and breath open up?
When life is happening through you, there’s a healthy relationship between you and the world. You are no longer resisting or controlling every moment.
There is balance:
receiving and giving,
agency and humility,
purpose and acceptance.
When feeling life happens through you, you’re now integrated.
You have less pressure on living for results. Less of a need for certainty. You become more open to fully experiencing yourself and the world around you.
